A new study suggests that a medication called "Sildenafil" could lead to the use of antidepressants in a number of men.
The study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, was conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania.
This study looked at more than 100,000 men with erectile dysfunction and compared their effects with those of sildenafil, a similar class of drugs known as "Sildenafil Citrate".
The drug was compared to a different type of antidepressant, and it is also available in a generic form. This drug was used in the study.
It was found that "Sildenafil" was not as effective at relieving sexual symptoms as other drugs like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. But when compared to other drugs, it was found to be more effective than either drug alone.
"We were able to make a compelling case that this drug was an option for men who may be at greater risk for depression and anxiety," said study co-author Dr. David G. Johnson of University of Pennsylvania's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. "We were able to demonstrate a small advantage over Viagra which is relatively cheap and relatively effective and could potentially be used as a treatment."
Johnson and his team recruited men between the ages of 18 and 40 with erectile dysfunction and depression who were willing to take sildenafil for the first time, or sildenafil for men with a history of depression or anxiety.
Those who had taken the drug were asked to fill out a questionnaire and, if successful, were randomized to receive a placebo or a placebo twice a day for 4 weeks. The treatment was similar to sildenafil for the first 4 weeks, but the effect of the drug increased over time.
Researchers reported in the study that the effect of the drug increased with each dose, with the average effect increasing from a median of 3.8 to 4.3 percent.
The authors conclude that a dose of sildenafil that was higher than that of Viagra and Cialis might offer a benefit to men who may be at greater risk for depression and anxiety.
Johnson and his team are continuing their work to explore the use of other drugs for the treatment of male sexual dysfunction.
